Life came to a grinding halt across Kashmir on Monday in wake of 13 militant and four civilian killings in south Kashmir’s Shopian district yesterday which has led to massive anger among the population.
The authorities apprehending large scale protests have put restrictions at numerous places across Kashmir. Internet services continue to remain suspended on second straight day.
Commercial establishments and offices are also closed, while government ordered closure of all educational institutions on Monday.
Joint Resistance Leadership has called for shutdown in the Valley today.
All examinations scheduled on Monday were also postponed by all three universities including Kashmir University, Islamic University and Central University. Public transport was off the roads.
In region’s summer capital Srinagar government enforced restrictions particularly in downtown areas.
Barricades were put in place to curb civilian movement. Forces personnel were also seen in areas enforcing restrictions.
A vital road link leading to Kashmir’s tertiary care hospital SKIMS was kept open and scattered private vehicles were plying on it.
Similar reports are pouring in from other districts with south Kashmir remaining tense where militant and civilian killings took place.
Meanwhile, Train service Monday remained suspended for“security reasons” in the valley in view of shutdown call given by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) to protests against civilian and militant killings in south Kashmir.
“We have suspended the train service in Kashmir valley for security reasons on Monday,” a railway official said.
He said all trains between Srinagar to Banihal in Jammu region passing through south Kashmir will remain suspended for “security reasons” for the second day on Monday.
Similarly, he said, trains will also not chug on Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla track in north Kashmir. On Sunday, the trains were running normally on the north Kashmir route.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik have called for Kashmir-wide shutdown on Monday against the killing of civilians and militants.
The government forces shot dead thirteen militants and four civilians in three different gunfight in two districts of south Kashmir.
Three army men were also killed during the gunfights.
Over 200 civilians were also injured in various clashes across south Kashmir on Sunday.

The slain civilians were identified as:
- Zubair Ahmad Bhat of Gopalpora
- Mehraj Din Bhat of Kachidoora
- Mohammad Iqbal Bhat of Shopian
- Mushtaq Ahmad Thoker.
Three army men were identified as:
- Sepoy Hetram
- Gunner Nilesh Singh
- Gunner Arvindar Kumar.
